Living in Columbia, Bellingham WA — Your Complete Neighborhood Guide
Quick Facts About Columbia
Welcome to Columbia
Columbia is one of my favorite neighborhoods to show clients—and it’s probably not for the reasons you’d expect. While it might not have the waterfront glamour of Sehome or the quirky charm of some of Bellingham’s trendier areas, what Columbia offers is something increasingly rare in today’s market: genuine affordability combined with a genuinely central location.
Nestled between downtown Bellingham and the Guide Meridian commercial corridor, Columbia gives you the best of both worlds. You’re minutes from the hustle and bustle when you need it, but you come home to a quiet, established neighborhood filled with real families who’ve been here for decades. It’s the kind of place where you actually know your neighbors—and where you can still afford to buy your first home without stretching yourself to the breaking point.
The Housing Stock
Columbia’s character comes from its age and authenticity. Most of what you’ll find here were built between the 1950s and 1980s—a mix of well-maintained ranches, split-levels, and some classic mid-century gems that just feel like home. In the last 10-15 years, we’ve seen some newer infill properties and renovated homes hit the market, which has added a nice diversity to the neighborhood without dramatically changing its character.
You’ll find homes ranging from cozy 1,000-square-foot starter homes up to larger family properties pushing 2,500+ square feet. Most sit on quarter-acre to half-acre lots—not huge, but enough to have a yard, grow some plants, or let the kids play outside. The price range typically runs $450,000 to $650,000, depending on condition and whether there’s been recent updating.
What I love showing buyers here is that you’re not paying for a brand-new kitchen or luxury finishes. You’re paying for location, foundation, and bones. That means if you’re willing to do some updating over time, you can build serious equity. Many of my clients have bought here, invested in their homes over 5-10 years, and watched their investment grow while building exactly the life they wanted.
Lifestyle & Amenities
One of Columbia’s biggest selling points is proximity to everything. You’re walking distance to Sunset Square, which has become a real community hub with shops, restaurants, and that genuine neighborhood feel. Head east on Guide Meridian and you’ve got Bellis Fair mall, grocery stores, and every retail option you could want—all within a 5-10 minute drive.
For outdoor recreation, you’ve got several parks nearby. The neighborhood has that suburban feel while still being close enough to downtown that you can bike or drive there in under 10 minutes. If you’re into hiking, the foothills and Nooksack River access are within 20 minutes. Urban living meets the Pacific Northwest lifestyle.
What really strikes me about Columbia is the community feel. It’s the kind of neighborhood where block parties still happen, where people actually use their front porches, and where you’ll see kids riding bikes and families walking to the park on summer evenings. It feels lived-in and authentic in a way that newer developments sometimes struggle to achieve.
Schools Nearby
If you’ve got school-age kids, Columbia puts you in good range of several solid schools:
- Larson Elementary — Right in the area, serves the core of the neighborhood
- Gunn Middle School — Easy access, just north of the neighborhood
- Bellingham High School — The primary high school for the area
The schools here are solid, community-focused institutions. Bellingham’s schools generally perform well, and Columbia’s central location means you’re not driving across town for school runs. It’s one of those practical things that matters more than people realize when you’re buying a family home.
Who Should Consider Columbia?
This neighborhood is especially well-suited for:
- First-time home buyers — The price point and inventory make this a natural entry point into Bellingham homeownership
- Young families — Good schools, safe streets, room to grow, and prices that let you build equity instead of just paying rent
- People who value affordability — You get more square footage and land per dollar here than in trendier neighborhoods
- Buyers who want central location — Unlike more remote neighborhoods, you’re genuinely close to everything
- Investors — The price-to-value ratio creates opportunities for strategic renovation and resale
