Nooksack

Nooksack is a small city in Whatcom County's Nooksack Valley, sitting on State Route 9 about five miles south of the Canadian border and roughly a half-hour northeast of Bellingham. Despite the name, the town actually sits beside the upper Sumas River, just over a mile from the Nooksack River itself. Long a Nooksack Tribe river-crossing and trail site, it was platted in the 1860s and incorporated in 1912, growing up around a rail line before early-1900s fires reshaped its small downtown. Today it is a quiet farming community of modest single-family homes on a compact grid, newer homes on the edges, and rural acreage with Mount Baker views, sharing the Nooksack Valley School District with neighboring Everson and Sumas.
