Glacier

Glacier is the last community on the Mount Baker Highway (SR 542) before the road climbs to the Mt. Baker Ski Area about 20 miles east, and it lives and breathes the mountain. Founded in 1909 around gold mining and logging and opened to travelers when the highway arrived in 1923, this small North Fork Nooksack River valley community of roughly 300 year-round residents still greets visitors at the historic 1938 Glacier Public Service Center at the edge of town. Homes here are mostly forest cabins, A-frames and chalets tucked among the trees, including the Glacier Springs, Mt. Baker Rim and Snowline communities, and they trade as ski getaways, vacation rentals and full-time retreats alike.
